The US supreme court has 9 persons - so a slim majority is 5-4. Sandra Day O'Connor has been the "swing" vote and she was about 50/50 for or against the Democrat or Republican viewpoint.
I think I'd be very suprised if Dubya doesn't put in a bible-thumpin' gun-totin' oil-baron in her place. Then watch gay rights be quashed, abortion outlawed and the obliteration of the separation of church and state.
We may have to tighten our border with all the refugess from the "red" states moving to Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver with the huddled masses yearning to be free.
We may have a section of Toronto called "Little Boston" where you can get the best beans in town.
"Freedom" to Dubya means only who and what HIS PEOPLE say you are free to do.

El Courto Supremo - hmmmm... aren't they supposed to uphold the constitution - supposedly still, the highest law in the land... ?
I question that they have done that -- particularly with Day OConnor been so hard to pin down. Many times her judgements have seen to be academic and judicial equivelents of backflips through rings of fire... to provide precedents in her decisions.
It seems with the Rehnquist Court era - we have seen such underpinnings of civil liberties that have been circumscribed with poor thinking... mostly cop-out measures in eroding choices and freedom from excessive state interference in this post-911 world.
Granted -- they did strike down the 'carte blanc' attitude the Bush Dubya had with regard to certain Gulags in Cuba and arrest without charges. But nothing has substantially been done... or changed.
The attitude that pervades in the courts of law and legislation -which both Brian Mulroney, Mikey Harris and Dubya have carried out in their 'agendas':
"We KNOW these laws are unconstitutional that we are propagating.... but we DON'T CARE. We are so cynical - we will ram through these laws (even though we are violating the law knowingly) -- we'll have the several years in affect with these egregious laws are enacted... till they are 'struck down.' We'll still get what we want done and be damned with the consequences. People being arrested with no cause... playing to fear gets you re-elected. (See Karl Rove - evil genius behind Dubya as his henchman/political advisor.)
Nobody except 'the liberal elite' will give a damn or understand what we are doing. And they are on the run...."
Fuck freedom -- or rules of law or privacy... we want to be strong and look like we are fighting this 'enemy' or a war that will never end. We'll leave the mess to the Democrats -but we'll stack the court for the next 25 years... let alone all the conservative/radical conservative decisions that will set back the course of judicial thinking at least 150 years.
See - the US Supreme Court is a 'court of competant jurisdiction' for other countries to reference in its decisions. So is Canada's and others (UK, Australia, etc.) as we share British/Roman Common Law. But the US doesn't tend to take into account except its own... always a big downfall I have seen. The parochial view of the US in action again.

I have always used i.e. as e.g. I guess for some reason. I took Latin for all of 3 weeks in 1983 so I am no whiz.
Thw state motto for New Hampshire is "Live free or die. Sounds pretty good, util you realise that this is acommand, not a suggestion. My imagination conjures up some hairy red-necked heavily armed leatherface that looks like he's got lost on the way to shooting "Deliverance." I just know he's going to stick both barrels of a fully loaded shotgun up my nose while screaming "Live free or die, bitch! Make up your mind, you pinko commie faggot loving feminist witch!
